Kurt Weill Festival 2024

The Kurt Weill Festival celebrates its 32nd season from 23 February – 10 March 2024. With almost 50 events at 16 well-known and new venues, visitors to the popular international cultural festival can look forward to a diverse, cross-genre programme under the motto “Shining in the Shadows”.
This time, the inspiration for the upcoming motto was found in Kurt Weill’s wife, Lotte Lenya. “I’m not famous enough for people to be interested in my life without Kurt.” She is said to have once replied to a request for a documentary about her own life.

Lotte Lenya, Elisabeth Hauptmann, Alma Mahler, Milva, Fanny Mendelssohn, Anne Frank, Marie Curie, Erika Mann and many other women of the past achieved feats that, in the organiser’s view, often unjustly remained in the shadows and did not receive the attention they deserved. Artists such as Andrea Sawatzki, Corinna Harfouch, Peter Lohmeyer, Ute Gfrerer, Anna Depenbusch, Katharine Mehrling, Vladimir Korneev, Andrea Eckert and many more will immerse themselves in the life stories of these women and bring their life’s work to the stages of the various venues of the Kurt Weill Festival 2024.

Among the artists Constanze Mitter and Gerhard Kämpfe have put together is all-round talent and The Masked Singer winner Max Mutzke.
His programme “Max Mutzke and Band” will provide good humour and touching moments in an extraordinary setting at the DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung plant in Dessau.

The annual family concert will also take place at DB FZI’s Dessau facility, this time with “Eule findet den Beat”, a live production of the audio book featuring the curious blue and yellow owl who playfully discovers the world of music and has become an indispensable part of many children’s rooms. The heart and soul of this programme full of strong women is the artist-in-residence and award-winning violinist Liv Migdal. She started playing the violin when she was only three years old and fills the pieces she performs with great feeling. She breathes and lives the music and tells the stories of the composers behind it through her instrument.

The Young Artists’ Podium is once again a mainstay of the programme. It offers a stage for young, talented artists whose careers are to be given a springboard onto the really big stages. There will also be a new edition of the popular Bauhaus Residency, together with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and Aktion Musik/ local heroes e.V..
In addition to well-known venues such as the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, the Bauhaus Dessau, the Kornhaus and the Marienkirche, new or revived venues will also be added. For example, the Kiez-Kino, the MDR-Landesfunkhaus Sachsen-Anhalt in Magdeburg, the Johannes-Göderitz Concert Hall in Magdeburg and also the new Weill Synagogue in Dessau.

On Monday, 20.11.2023, the official advance sale for all events will start. Tickets can be purchased on the Kurt Weill Festival website, www.kurt-weill-fest.de, or by telephone on 0340/ 61 19 07 (Mon-Thu from 09.00 – 17.00).
