Kurt Weill Festival 2023

31st Kurt Weill Festival starts in a few weeks.

In just under a month, the 31st Kurt Weill Festival will begin. From Feb. 24-March 12, 2023, the renowned international cultural festival will take place at a total of 16 new and well-known venues in and around Weill’s birthplace of Dessau.

This year’s Kurt Weill Festival, whose motto this year is “In the Sign of Upheaval,” will feature a total of 47 high-quality musical program items. The audience can expect a journey back in time to the turbulent “Golden Twenties”, in which both the intoxicating, excessively partying and progressive side of this era will be illuminated, as well as the poverty, fear and uncertainty that characterized it just as much. At the same time, the Kurt Weill Festival in 2023 will once again bridge the gap to the present day – through a diverse and innovative program ranging from classical to pop, rap, jazz and musical, as well as moving themes and musical discourse.

“We are very pleased that this program is so well received,” says musicologist Constanze Mitter, who shares artistic direction of the festival with music producer Gerhard Kämpfe. Tickets for some concerts are still available.
Particularly popular, says Mitter, are the events featuring artist-in-residence Sebastian Knauer. Those who want to experience the world-renowned pianist live can do so, among other things, in the program of a piano recital with Sebastian Knauer, “Songbook: Gershwin and Weill – Brothers on Broadway.” It will take place on Friday, 10.03.2023, 20.00 o’clock, in the Marienkirche in Dessau.

Sebastian Knauer will also perform together with Revolverheld lead singer Johannes Strate at the Steintor-Varieté in Halle (Saale) on Friday, 03.03.2023, 20.00 hrs. The two popular musicians create an exciting arch between the best-known songs of Revolverheld and classical pieces such as the “Moonlight Sonata” by Ludwig van Beethoven. The genres of pop/rock and classical music will be woven into one; both artists will also have their own personal say in the process.

Fans of silent film can look forward to Fritz Lang’s monumental work “Metropolis.” The film is considered one of the most expensive and lavish of its time. The screening during the Kurt Weill Festival will start on Friday, March 10, 2023, 8 p.m., in the large hall of the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau on the big screen, musically accompanied by the Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau.

It is also important to secure the remaining free seats now for the closing event with the lively Kurt Weill play “Happy End”. The comedy penned by Elisabeth Hauptmann and featuring the music of Kurt Weill will begin on Sunday, March 12, 2023, 6 p.m., also at the Anhaltisches Theater, and will crown the Kurt Weill Fest 2023 with a furious finale.

The remaining tickets can be purchased online at www.kurt-weill-fest.de, or by phone at 0340/611907 (Mon-Thu 09.00-18.00).
