Open Monument Day 2023

Sunday, September 10, 2023

The nationwide Open Monument Day celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. It will be held on September 10, 2023, under the motto “Talent Monument.”

This motto is intended to shine a spotlight on the unique characteristics and qualities of all monuments. The importance and value of each historic property – its “talents” should be appreciated.

Monument owners, associations and institutions open their objects for visitors in and around Dessau-Roßlau. After a break of several years, this year’s program also includes a monument bike tour.

Bike tour

The bike tour will focus on art on buildings and in public spaces. In addition to designated cultural monuments, there will also be some objects that have the “talent” to become monuments. The bike tour will start at 10:00 a.m. in Dessau-Süd at the former Südschwimmhalle. There there will be the possibility to visit the concrete glass wall also from the interior. The tour continues past short stops of further art objects to the former Jakobus parish house, which is equipped with an artistically designed glass window.

After the stops at Krötenhof and Muldstraßenquartier, the bike tour leads to Dessau City Hall. There, the mural created in the early 1950s in the council chamber, but also the stained glass window in the anteroom to the council chamber and the mural design in the hallway of the 1st floor can be visited. At the city hall the bicycle tour ends around 13.30 o’clock. For those interested, information for further explorations on your own will be given in the form of a small “handout”.
