First city cycling in Dessau-Roßlau

STADTRADELN is a competition in which the aim is to cycle as many everyday journeys as possible in a climate-friendly way for 21 days. It doesn’t matter whether you already cycle every day or have rarely done so. Every kilometer counts – especially if you would otherwise have traveled it by car.

That’s what it’s all about:

We believe you can tell people a lot about the benefits of biking. But the most effective way to convince them is to simply get on a bike yourself for 21 days.

The results of the competition show how many people are already cycling and thus making a contribution to climate protection. In order for even more people to permanently switch from cars to bicycles, there needs to be a cycling infrastructure that allows them to reach their destination quickly and safely.

In order to draw attention to the needs of cyclists, STADTRADELN is also aimed at local politicians. They are the decision-makers when it comes to the bicycle infrastructure and thus practical climate protection on site. During the campaign, they themselves take the driver’s perspective and find out where the municipality is already bike-friendly and where improvements still need to be made.

To make it easier for local authorities to improve the cycling infrastructure in a targeted manner, they can directly access the knowledge of their citizens as everyday cycling experts via our citizen participation platform RADar! The cyclists report potholes, suddenly ending bike lanes or unclear traffic routing directly to their administration in a digital city map and the administration takes care of the matter. But the STADTRADELN app also benefits your local cycling planning. The routes tracked by the app during STADTRADELN are analyzed anonymously by the Technical University of Dresden. The findings – for example, where people ride how much and how fast, or where the flow of cycling traffic is slowed down – can be made available to local authorities.

For many decades, the car was the relevant category in mobility. This must change in order to reduce traffic-related environmental damage! Since the traffic turnaround begins in the mind, we want to make the topic of cycling more present in the public discourse. For this purpose, the STADTRADELN creates communication events in the communities on a national and local level.

The kick-off of the 21 days will take place on 08 September 2023, at 18.00 U
