Anhalt Theatre presents new season

True to the motto ‘It’s so green’, the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau presents the programme for the 231st season.

On Thursday, 22 May, General Director Johannes Weigand and Administrative Director Lutz Wengler presented the premieres, concerts, revivals, guest performances and events of the Anhaltisches Theater’s 231st season together with the heads of the various departments.
18 premieres, 17 revivals and numerous symphonic concert programmes and guest events in abundance await their grand entrance for the 2025/2026 season.
The 2025/26 season will open with the traditional open-air opening concert. This year, the concert will take place in front of the Mausoleum in Dessau Zoo. In the 231st season, audiences can look forward to major hit productions such as Johann Strauss’ (son) operetta classic Die Fledermaus, The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov and Swan Lake by Peter I. Tchaikovsky.
The dance evening Valses/Der Grüne Tisch marks the first premiere at the Großes Haus and heralds the Dessau Bauhaus anniversary. Stefano Giannetti will set Maurice Ravel’s waltz compositions to Kurt Jooss’ legendary anti-war play Der Grüne Tisch. This production is sponsored by the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung and the Sparkasse Dessau.

The colour green can be found in many productions. This is also the case in this year’s Christmas tale, where Kasperle and his friend Seppel go into the forest to retrieve their grandmother’s beloved coffee grinder. The robber Hotzenplotz by Otfried Preußler is a true classic and has enchanted young and old alike ever since. On New Year’s Eve, it will be green AND colourful, as the classic musical My Fair Lady returns to the stage in the new season. The Old Theatre also has exciting puppet and drama productions in store again this year. At the turn of the year, audiences can look forward to the premiere of Jeeps. In her black-humoured comedy, Nora Abdel-Maksoud creates a fictional scenario in which the state raffles off inheritances to citizens. The play raises questions about fairness, privileges, social justice and financial security. Other premieres include Nachtland by Marius von Mayenburg, Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, The Elephant in the White Sea by Yana Shliabanska and many more. Children can look forward to three new puppet productions. Starting with the premiere of Der kleine Raabe Socke by Jürg Schlachter after Nele Moose. This will be followed by The Princess and the Pea by Kerstin Dathe after Hans Christian Anderson and the solo puppet show Bunt und Rund by Karin Eppler.

This season, the Anhalt Philharmonic Orchestra will once again present eight high-calibre symphony concerts. The last one will once again take place in front of the Mausoleum in Dessau Zoo.
The audience can look forward to soloists including Justus Eichhorn (piano), Charlotte Thiele (violin), Ania Vegry (soprano), Manuela Randlinger (harp), Kay Stiefermann (baritone), Liv Migdal (violin), Lyuta Kobayashi (clarinet) and Cenk Erbiner (viola). The concert Glücklich ist, wer vergisst… combines well-known melodies from opera, operetta and concert in one event, accompanied by the Rust Prize winner (2024) Julia Lehnert. The Hour of Classical Music, the Christmas Concert and six chamber concerts complete the multifaceted programme.
The New Year’s concert Musical Journey through South America is a special highlight. Rust Prize winner (2024) Leonie Seemann will perform together with the Anhalt Philharmonic Orchestra. The audience can also look forward to further concerts in the Raum für Klang series, which presents new music in unheard-of locations.
The Dessau Jazz Night and …vom Hocker?! series will once again entice audiences with many exciting and moving concerts in the new season. The trumpeter Thomas Siffling has written a musical declaration of love to numerous cities around the world and thus heralds the start of the Jazz Nights. Katharina Kollmann alias Nichtseattle gives voice to the longing for a better world with sensitive guitar tracks and sweeps the audience off their feet.

For the open-air concerts in June at the Mausoleum, melodies from operas, operettas and musicals can be heard in the open air at Ströme des Lebens, ‘Bangers Only!’ promises the Summer Night Jazz with the Jazzrausch Bigband and nostalgics will get their money’s worth at the silent film concert Goldrausch, a Chaplin film. In front of the picturesque backdrop of the Mausoleum, the Christmas carol concert will take place again this year, where the theatre and the audience will bring Dessau and Roßlau to life.
