Triennial of Modernism 2025

The Triennial of Modernism 2025 has the motto ‘Torn Modernism(s)’. The starting point is the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus’s move from Weimar to Dessau in 1925, which is seen as a symbol of migration, displacement and new beginnings. However, the motto not only addresses historical ruptures, but also focuses on current social and political tensions.

‘Torn apart’ refers to conflicts with tradition and anti-modernism, as well as experiences of fascism and violence, but also internal tensions within reform movements and the contradictions of modern developments. These ambivalences are addressed in various locations: in Weimar with a focus on the Bauhaus years from 1919 to 1925, in Dessau on the new beginning from 1925 onwards, and in Berlin with the 100th anniversary of the Hufeisensiedlung and other examples of New Building.
In addition, 80 years of reconstruction and post-war modernism as well as 50 years of the European Charter of Monuments of 1975 also play a role.

In Dessau, there is a special focus on the ‘Invisible Bauhaus’ project, which aims to make Bauhaus sites visible that no longer exist or are barely recognisable today. The focus is particularly on the early days in 1925/26, when the Bauhaus buildings and masters’ houses had not yet been built.

Visitors can explore these sites on their own with digital tours, analogue clues in the city, and video and audio walks.
The Dessau-Roßlau City Archives are also participating with readings of historical texts and protocols from the early days of the Bauhaus, presented by schoolchildren, for example.
An accompanying calendar of events complements the programme.

The events in Dessau will take place from 26 to 28 September 2025.
