Bauhaus Dessau Celebrates 100 Years – An Anniversary That Goes Beneath the Surface
When the doors of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation open on March 28, 2026, a very special chapter will begin: With the anniversary program “To the Essence. Bauhaus Dessau 100,” one of the most significant sites of modern architecture invites visitors to discover the Bauhaus from a completely new perspective.
The focus is not only on forms and ideas, but above all on the materials themselves: glass, concrete, metal—and even algae, rubble, and CO₂. The two major exhibitions offer fascinating insights into the material, technological, and economic foundations of Bauhaus design.
In the historic Bauhaus building, the exhibition “Glass | Concrete | Metal” takes visitors right to the heart of this iconic structure. At the same time, the exhibition “Algae | Rubble | CO₂” in the former Zeeck department store explores innovative and sustainable approaches to construction—offering a fascinating glimpse into the future of architecture.
The anniversary can also be experienced outside traditional exhibition spaces: open-air presentations focus, among other things, on the Steel House and the Junkers Slat Hall at Leopoldshafen. Around the historic employment office, visitors can also marvel at the installation “Superbricks for All Species” by the Danish artist group SUPERFLEX. The installation consists of pink, curved bricks made of unfired clay, produced at the nearby Schultheiß-Patzenhofer Brewery.
An opening weekend full of experiences
The kickoff on March 28 begins at 11 a.m. with a festive opening program in the Bauhaus building. Speakers will include Barbara Steiner as well as representatives from politics and culture. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the accordion ensemble Triolade.
Afterward, visitors can experience the exhibitions up close on guided tours or learn more about the background and ideas behind the anniversary program during engaging panel discussions.
In the evening, Dessau transforms into a creative party scene: at the “Metallic Dance Club” at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, art, design, and music come together. Installations, performances, and DJ sets create a special atmosphere that lasts well into the night.
Art, exchange, and new perspectives
March 29 is also all about discovery: curator-led tours and short talks at the former Zeeck department store and in the Bauhaus building will delve deeper into the themes of the exhibitions and encourage discussion.
A special highlight on both days is the textile installation “Flaggschiff” by Bettina Mileta, which adorns the façade of the studio building (Prellerhaus) all day long and offers a visual reinterpretation of the Bauhaus.
An anniversary that moves
“An die Substanz” is more than an exhibition—it is an invitation to rethink the Bauhaus: starting with its materials and moving toward current questions of building and design.
Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast, an art lover, or simply curious—this anniversary offers exciting insights and unforgettable experiences in Dessau for everyone.
Further information on the full program, as well as booking options for guided tours and events, will be available shortly on the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s website.
