I met the President of Germany.
A few weeks ago, I received an unexpected invitation from the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier bundespraesident.steinmeier , and his wife to join the Bürgerfest at Schloss Bellevue in Berlin. It was a celebration dedicated to recognising and honouring voluntary social workers from across the country.
This year, more than 4,000 people from all over Germany were invited to the residence of the Federal President under the motto “Ehrensache – Ich bin dabei”. Together with the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the event highlighted the people and initiatives that make our civil society vibrant, resilient and compassionate.
For me, it was a great honour to represent the city of Dessau-Roßlau (visit.dessau) and the onecommunityprojekt , which I initiated in 2019 to bring seniors and young people together, especially during the pandemic, to overcome social isolation through music, dance and cultural exchange.
Standing in the gardens of Schloss Bellevue, surrounded by so many people who dedicate their time, energy and creativity to serving others, was both humbling and inspiring. In his speech, President Steinmeier reminded us that Germany is proud of you and that this day was for us to simply enjoy. And that is exactly what I did: meeting new people, exchanging experiences and even taking a selfie with the President himself.
I left the Bürgerfest more motivated than ever to continue this journey. The recognition is encouraging, but what truly moves me is the reminder that every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to a stronger and more connected society.
From Dessau to Bellevue, the journey has been beautiful, and I am excited for what lies ahead.
